About the Ripcord from OTIS
When the US military requested a product with an easy-feed design that could be used from a standing position and offered the best clean in a single pass, OTIS Tec’s engineering team got to work.
That set of requirements gave rise to the OTIS Ripcord, which has been combatting carbon and fouling in firearms, by military, law enforcement and sporting users ever since.
Here are some answers to OTIS Ripcord FAQs; and a few pointers to help you make the most of your Ripcord:
What makes the Ripcord different from the rest?
In a nutshell: anatomy. Because of its construction and material composition, Ripcord offers the greatest one-pass cleaning for firearms. At its core, the Memory-Flex® cable is incredibly durable and resilient. This eliminates the need for a gravity feed and enables you to run your Ripcord through your gun from Breech-to-Muzzle®. The cleaning surface is kept forced against the bore by the stiff, helix-shaped rubber core, which engages the rifling for a forceful clean.
You may clean it at the range or in the field while the barrel is still hot because the braided Nomex® surface can withstand temperatures of up to 700°.
A bore brush can be attached (included with Ripcord Deluxe kits) for an even deeper clean. It’s quick, efficient, and incredibly portable.
Do I use the Ripcord with solvent or dry?
You can use the Ripcord dry or wet.
When the firearm is still warm and the carbon and fouling are still loose in the barrel, we advise utilising the Ripcord® at the range or in the field. Before it cools, the fouling is easier to remove from the barrel. Consider it like washing your dishes immediately after cooking instead than letting them sit. Just remember that although you can use solvent, using the Ripcord dry prolongs its life.
Where do I add solvent/oil on the Ripcord?
Put a few drops of oil or solvent to the Ripcord’s leading end. This is the front end of the Ripcord’s largest section.
As an alternative, you can affix a patch and slotted tip to the Ripcord and apply solvent or oil straight to the patch to prolong its lifespan.
Can you clean a Ripcord?
You can, indeed! The majority of fouling naturally slips off the Ripcord when it is cleaned. To help, remove big particles with an AP brush. Since lead particles from the Ripcord can leave a deposit on clothes or dishes, we do not advise putting it in the washing machine or dishwasher!
What are the threaded ends for on a Ripcord?
The Ripcord is a more adaptable product because of its threaded ends. If you would like, you can add extra cleaning by attaching a brush or slotted tip & patch to the 8-32 threads. To help draw the Ripcord through the barrel, you can additionally attach a t-handle.
